Glenn Morrison‘s new artist album ‘Into The Deep‘ was released few weeks ago and now we have an exclusive interview with the producer. Glenn reveals all details and his thoughts about this album. You can stream it below the interview and grab your copy on beatport here.
Hallo, Glenn! Welcome to House Planet!
Very nice to meet you too and thanks for having me on House Planet, I love your site. Right now I’m sitting in my sunroom just getting my morning interviews done and preparing for a studio job today.
You’re just released your new album ‘Into The Deep‘ – tell us about it.
Into The Deep was a vehicle for me to put together a cohesive body of work that didn’t have to rely on listening to anyone else’s opinions about what they thought should go on the album or not. I was so extremely tired of listening to random A&R’s who sit at a desk all day in a non-creative writing environment telling ME what to do and write. Sony & Universal are great and my relationships with them are growing year over year but I just needed on this album to take a step back and go back to my roots – how I became successful and known was through the underground house world many years ago, and I wanted to do something in that headspace. It was a passion project that grew exponentially and now we are figuring out the vinyl release as well as commissioning the remixers for the package.
How does your production process materialise? Are you a deep thinker in the studio, a perfectionist, an emotive producer? How do you work best?
Very emotive producer I’d say. I went to the school of hard knocks for music production and learned everything through my dear friends and collaboration studio partners over the years. I work best being alone but I actively collaborate all the time depending on the project and scope. I have built a really amazing studio for myself and I find myself as I get older slowly becoming more and more reclusive – just leave me in the room and at the end of the day we’ll see what was borne from the session writing. This is a good way of looking at my headspace.
You decided to release it on your own label Morrison Recordings. You’ve spent the last few years working with major labels like Sony and Universal and you’ve won a ton of awards for them. Why not release ‘Into The Deep‘ with them?
Frankly I think they have 0 interest in records that are made without vocals / underground house style. They are looking for radio hits and commercial success – this is totally cool and I am capable of writing those records. I use them for all things commercial because they are great at what they do. But for this underground house sensibility, they have no interest and they don’t know who to service the promo’s to, how to get it into Radio 1 hands, how to get cool remixers etc. I’ve been doing this for so long now that I simply know how to do it myself and get the release out in the best way possible. The whole point of me writing this album was to have an outlet whereby I could write WHATEVER I wanted and not be told what to do with it.
Does this new album mean that you’re making a full time return to dance music? Do you have any plans to tour?
I am making a concerted effort to next year be really pushing a lot of cool records out – things that do not fit on Billboard or radio charts. I will still actively have those releases too but everything will be much more streamlined as I hired a lot of new people to help me grow and scale the various styles of music that I write. Next year will be VERY exciting because I have Alpine getting a new studio design build, and also I plan to tour only for special venues and great shows. Less shows but I’ll be picky on choosing them so that each one can be incredible / memorable.
You’ve had some incredible support from DJs for the album – Danny Tenaglia, David Morales, Richie Hawtin, Luciano, Maceo Plex to name just a few. They’re definitely more in the ‘mature’ section of artists – do you think this album will appeal to the younger generation who are listening to artists like Steve Aoki, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, for example?
To be honest I have no clue what those EDM artists may think of the album. I didn’t service the promo to those names you mentioned either so hopefully they enjoy it but they are not my target demographic. This album is around 120 BPM, very intelligent headspace melodic techno music. I think it will very much appeal to those who appreciate intelligent electronic music and not some “paint by numbers” house approach. I never like to slander artists or styles because that is so nearsighted and ignorant. I simply hope that my music and this album in particular resonates a chord with people and it means something to the collective music consciousness.
For those that don’t know, you were considered one of the brightest rising stars, touring with Armin van Buuren across North America, releasing some incredible trance tracks – how come you decided to go off the radar? Was it a conscious decision or just a case of ‘timing’?
I made a lot of changes in my life a few years ago and left my old agencies / left my old touring alliances etc. I am very very grateful for all of those years of hardcore touring, and Armin teaching me how to play these massive venues and read the crowds. But something was definitely missing. Here I am 18 years old, touring the world doing over 100 shows a year at the best venues, BUT I was so young and learning everything all at once. I had way too much going on and I was the only one handling everything. So I needed to re-calibrate and figure out what it is that I wanted in all of this. I’m older now and really have a great team behind me. It took many years to get this. But we are starting to see serious accomplishments now like multiple platinum record sales, radio music awards, respect from my fellow peers in the industry. This is a perfect life as far as I’m concerned and I am very grateful to keep building my brand in the best way possible.
You’ve written and worked with a lot of big names. Who was your favourite and why?
It’s so hard to pick just one but forever I will always be in debt to my friends like Ariaan & Peter from 16 Bit / Cubicolor, Bruce Aisher, Joel (Deadmau5), and Matt Lange. All of these names have taught me so many things over the years on music production and they are truly all geniuses in what they do respectively.
If you could produce with anyone, alive or dead, who would it be and why?
I really love what Danny Tenaglia does and I appreciate his musicianship and craft. I think if him and I made a record it would be incredible and would love that opportunity to do that with him if it ever presented itself.
What is your favourite track from the album and why?
Personally I love ‘Frozen In Time (The End)’ the most. I keep going back to it and it’s such an emotional record. For some reason it just grabs me and even though there is a lot of tracks on this album that I love, this one for me takes the biscuit.
